An Economical Exhibit on the Economy Shop

One hundred years, embodied through objects donated to the Economy Shop is the theme of the new exhibit "Donations Through the Decades, Shopping Through the Century" at the Historical Society's Oak Park River Forest Museum. The objects, representing each decade from pre-1910 onward, are all donations that came into the charity resale shop since August.

The Economy Shop was started in April 1919 by women who saw a need for items no longer needed to be sold at a discount to others. They also wanted the proceeds to go to the five Oak Park charities at the time – Infant Welfare, Associated Charities (now Thrive Counseling Center), the Day Nursery, West Suburban Hospital Auxiliary and Hephzibah Home.​

This is when I learned of the Economy Shop (103 South Grove). Although I lived in Oak Park, I had yet to explore the wonderful array of thrift shops and resale stores in the area. A coworker informed me of an amazing store in my own neighborhood where I could find anything and everything I needed: the Economy Shop. Books, clothes, furniture, absolutely anything. Really? Yes, anything. And so a love affair was borne.
